97 Sidekick ECU - No 5V Ref (pics)

The 5V reference is usually protected by a current limiting resistor, I would trace the circuitry back from the output pin on the connector. is it the 5V out that is dead or all the 5V? Do you have 5V on any of the capacitors around the processor? A quick Google search suggests that the ECU is for a 1997 1.6 manual. I have a very similar ECU here but with EE93 software. What is the PCB number?

EDIT: I didn't realize there was more info on RhinoPower.org... I'll dig around there a bit.

I'm going to bump this thread since I am back on the motivation train to figure this thing out.

I have no 5V reference. The ECU that is in the car has been worked on before and there is a yellow jumper wire on the back side. I'm questioning if this ECU was a "refurbished" one and if it is correct for my specific model. fix-kick's webpages have all died.

Is there a master list where I can verify what ECU I should have?

Can anyone point to some steps for testing the 5V circuit? Or point out a main component that normally dies if the 5V ref gets shorted?

Or does anyone here repair these as a side-gig? biggrin

It doesn't make much difference if the caps have X or K on them, Mitsubishi used a number of different types across the years, they are old and beyond their life expectancy so they should be replaced. Quite often you will find that there is damage hidden beneath them, there was an issue some of these DSM ECUs where too much coating was used on some boards and the caps weren't able to vent properly which causes the copper trace underneath to erode.
The 5V reference should be simple to trace through from the connector, from memory it has only has only a resistor for protection.

Hi folks, I'm brand new here. I was sent here from Suzuki Forum for expert advice with an ECU issue. I'm also brand new to this level of diagnosis. I've tinkered with Arduino in school so I'm not afraid of it, but I've never messed with soldering. There's an electronics guy in town that I think could get the job done once I figure out what needs done.

Here's the link to the other forum thread. https://www.suzuki-forums.com/threads/tps-troubleshooting-no-5v-ref.272259/#post-1583331

It all started with a TPS code and evolved to me not having 5V ref from the ECU. I'll attach pics for what I'm seeing on the ECU. I've read a couple other posts talking about checking continuity in the traces in the circuits on the board and others instantly go for capacitor replacement. Two of them have X's on top and the other has a K.

Can someone tell me if there's a best sequence for testing? Next steps?

PS - It looks like someone else has been in here before... There is a pin marked with red marker and I'm assuming it's the 5V ref pin (haven't verified).
