The chip is usually molded into the key but if you have the type with central locking then it is simple to swap the transponders across, I've never removed the chip from inside a key. I think the dash is the same, I don't recall where the loom is split, maybe at the fuse box. When I bought the 1.6 Baleno engine for my SJ the loom had been cut through at the bulkhead to make it easier to remove!
I haven't looked at the B6 ECU for a while but I've been working on the BP5 over the last few weeks, that ECU is a lot more sophisticated with intake runner and alternator field controls, it does have a good diagnostic link though which makes reverse engineering a lot easier.

It is the J18A engine, sadly. I am an MX5 owner myself so the BP would've been more fun to work with! (I initially found this place through your pages on MX5 ECU EPROM adapters; still interested in getting into that some time as I have a B6ZE engine in mine..)
The Baleno is my brother's, and the engine wiring loom is indeed very different to the one on the 1.6 due to major differences in ignition system (DLI on the 1.8) and air metering (IAT-based on the 1.8) so that will be dropped into the car along with the engine, but the dashboards are the same on the dash side, so I hope I won't have to replace anything but the immobilizer and the locks, then. I don't really like the idea of swapping dashboards due to the different odometer readings and such, so I will try to avoid doing that. (Now that I think of it.. couldn't I just break the keys open and swap the fobs from the keys? Haha..)

The ABS ECU should work with either ECU. They both use the same immobilizer but the data format used in the immo memory appears to be different, the 1.8 ECU uses an unusual memory chip as well, the simplest/cheapest way around that is to replace the immo and the locks. From what I remember the ECUs have a different pin out so you will need to change the loom as well.
Does the 1.8 have the Mazda BP engine or the Suzuki J18?

On a pair of Baleno sedans, both 1996, I am swapping the G16B from one with a J18A from the other (Donor car), then eventually fixing up the donor car and probably sell it on.. Either way, there are two things I am still questioning, perhaps unnecessarily but still:
1. Would it be possible to leave the ABS system in the 1.8 car and run the engine and ECU in the other car while possibly running the ABS system on the 1.6 car's ECU, or do I need a different set of ECUs for the 1.8 to not throw a tantrum, or for the 1.6 to be able to work with the ABS system?
2. Both cars being 1996 sedans, they most likely have the same sort of immobilizer, right? Implying that much, would it be possible to leave all the locks and immobilizers in the respective cars and just hook them up, or would I run into problems trying that?
I don't have the 1.6 info at hand yet (it is currently still driving around) but the 1.8's ECU has 8F on it (33920-62G50) and is built by Hitachi. I do believe the 1.6 has a Denso ECU.
