I think I have something very similar to that - in a Mitsubishi Pajero iO - with a 4 speed Aisin Warner transmission - my daughter has the car right now, I should have it back Thursday, and i'll be pulling the transfer case shift lever to work on it - the TCU is immediately behind the shift lever so I'll get pictures of it at the same time.

I've updated this page. I've been running test code on the processor and I have determined that this processor is much more than a 6801 replacement, it has the same core as the bigger processors used in many Mitsubishi engine management ECUs. That means it supports the Hitachi additional instructions plus it has Y-indexing and addtional timer functions.

The AW code uses 6801 instructions which is very inefficient given the capabilities available. It is likely that the 76C40 was chosen as a drop-in replacement for a 6801.

More data on this processor will be published in due course.

Added some details of an Aisin-Warner 4-speed transmission control unit for a Suzuki Vitara.

This TCM uses a 40-pin processor similar to a 6801 but with additional RAM and an E clock of 2MHz with a 12MHz crystal.
