I've been trying to source some reasonably priced extended pin socket strips for this project, the prices that I've got so far are too expensive as I want to try to produce this as a relaqtively cheap mod. Thye Metro ECU is going back on the bench today for more develpment work, its been held up by the Christmas break and because I've spent some time away testing a new OEM ECU.

This is a project that I have been considering for some time and I'm prototyping it on a 33920-50G11 Geo Metro ECU. Its an adapter board that allows a 27C256 EPROM to be replaced with a 29010 FLASH device.

The 29010 device has 128k, the Metro only uses 32k so I've added switches to the spare lines which means that its possible to select between four different versions of code which is useful during code development.


The adapter is designed to plug straight in but as the intention is to eventually be able to reflash the Metro ECU via the serial port a couple of minor mods were made to the PCB.
I've brought the /WR pin out to pin 1 which is the, unused, Vpp pin on the original EPROM and is connected directly to VCC.

On the top the track was cut and a wire link added to reconnect VCC to the rest of the circuitry. A pull up resistor on the adapter holds pin 1 at 5V so the original EPROM can still be used.

 

The board is intended to be soldered directly into the PCB for robustness, the mounting pins are extended to allow clearance underneath when required:

One of the requirements was that a emulator could still be used with the adapter so the board is dual socketed. With the original EPROM

and with the FLASH chip fitted, the dual DIP switch is not fitted as its mislaid somewhere in the lab!
